Welcome to South Korea! You’ve packed your bags, booked your hotel, and you are ready to explore. But wait—did you know that Google Maps cannot give you walking or driving directions in Korea? (Due to national security laws, its functions are highly restricted here!)

Many tourists arrive in Seoul and instantly panic when their usual apps don't work. But don't worry! As a local Korean, I am sharing the Top 5 Essential Apps you must download before your plane lands. These will make your trip 100x easier.

🗺️ 1. Navigation: Naver Map (네이버 지도)

Forget Google Maps. Naver Map is the absolute bible for getting around Korea. It provides hyper-accurate subway schedules, bus routes, and flawless walking directions even in the narrowest alleyways.

  • Local Tip: The app fully supports English! You can also save your favorite cafes and restaurants in custom lists.

🚖 2. Taxis: Kakao T (카카오 T)

Uber (UT) works in Korea, but there aren't many drivers. Kakao T is the Korean equivalent of Uber, and every single taxi driver in the country uses it. You can call a taxi anywhere, anytime.

  • Local Tip for Foreigners: You don't need a Korean credit card to use it! Just select 'Pay to the driver' (현장 결제) in the app, and you can pay with cash, T-money card, or your international credit card when you arrive at your destination.

🗣️ 3. Translation: Papago (파파고)

Google Translate is notoriously bad at translating Korean. Papago, developed by Korea's top tech company, uses AI to provide incredibly natural English-to-Korean translations.

  • Local Tip: Use the 'Image Translation' feature! Just point your camera at a Korean restaurant menu without English, and it will translate the dishes instantly.

🚇 4. Transit: Subway Korea

The Seoul subway system is one of the best in the world, but it is HUGE and can be confusing. The Subway Korea app gives you the fastest routes, exact transfer times, and tells you which train car to board for the quickest transfer.

🍽️ 5. Dining: Catchtable Global

Want to visit the trendy cafes in Seongsu or the famous restaurants from Netflix's Culinary Class Wars? You need Catchtable Global. It allows tourists to make restaurant reservations and join virtual waiting lines without a Korean phone number.

🆘 Still Lost? Ask Your Local Korean Friend!

Even with all these apps, you might run into a situation where you need to call a restaurant or ask a specific question. Don't worry! I run a Free Local Help Desk for tourists visiting Korea.
