Seoul’s public transportation system is consistently ranked as one of the best, cleanest, and most efficient in the world. However, to use it like a pro, you absolutely need one magical item: The T-money Card.
If you are planning your trip to South Korea, here is everything you need to know about buying, recharging, and using a T-money card to navigate the city stress-free!
💳 1. What is a T-money Card?
A T-money card is a rechargeable, prepaid smart card used to pay for transportation fares in and around Seoul (and most other cities in South Korea). You can use it on subways, buses, and even taxis.
- Bonus feature: You can also use your T-money card like a debit card to buy snacks at convenience stores (CU, GS25, 7-Eleven) and some vending machines!
🏪 2. Where to Buy a T-money Card
You can buy a T-money card the moment you land in South Korea.
- Incheon Airport: Buy it at the convenience stores located in the arrival hall.
- Convenience Stores: Almost every CU, GS25, 7-Eleven, and Emart24 sells them.
- Subway Stations: You can find ticket vending machines inside all subway stations.
- Cost: The empty card itself costs around 2,500 to 4,000 KRW ($2-$3 USD), depending on the design (they have cute Kakao Friends or K-pop designs!).
💵 3. How to Recharge (CASH ONLY!)
This is the most common mistake tourists make! While South Korea is a highly cashless society, you can ONLY recharge your T-money card using CASH (Korean Won). You cannot use a foreign credit card to top it up.
- Go to any convenience store, hand the cashier your card and some cash, and say "Choong-jeon hae-ju-se-yo" (Please recharge).
- Or use the recharge machines inside subway stations (they have full English menus).
🚨 4. The Golden Rule: ALWAYS Tap Out!
When taking the subway or the bus, you must tap your card on the sensor when you get ON, and you must tap it again when you get OFF.
- If you forget to tap out, you will be charged a penalty fee on your next ride, and you will lose out on transfer discounts.
💡 A Local's Pro Tip: Transfer Discounts
Free Transfers within 30 Minutes!
If you transfer from a subway to a bus (or vice versa) within 30 minutes of tapping out, the transfer is FREE or heavily discounted. This is why tapping out is so important!
